Effects of diabetes on gastrointestinal system ,blood vessels, wounds and infections, vision and other body systems -

In  view of the  elevated  levels of blood sugar  in  diabetes and  as  blood  circulates  through out the  various  systems of the human body, it  has  its  effects of body  systems.

Diabetes  being  not a  localised disease, it is a  generalised disorder.

Effects of diabetes on Gastrointestinal Function

Nausea, heart  burn, bloating are  some  of  the  symptoms that  should not be ignored  and  a possibility of  diabetes  should  be never ignored.

At  least  random blood sugar  should be done.

Diabetes  is  most  common  cause  of  gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis  is  a condition  that  affects the  emptying  of  the  stomach.

If  emptying  of  the  stomach  is  delayed  then  it  can  affect  the  digestive  process.

It  is  due to  damage to the  nerve  that  controls  the  muscles  of the  stomach and  it  is  well  known  fact  that  diabetes  affects the  nervous  system

Medical  line  of  treatment  can  help to  control  gastroparesis  but  the  condition  cannot be  completely  cured.

Some reports suggest that up to 75% of people with diabetes have problems with the gastrointestinal tract. For a general case, the muscles of the human stomach need to tighten so that food can pass through the person’s digestive system. Diabetes impairs GI function with a medical condition termed gastroparesis. In such cases, the high blood sugar level in the body affects the nerves that are damaged. This will result in the abdominal muscles slowing down or not working at all. As a result, the person’s stomach does not empty properly and the food that the person has taken takes a long time to leave the body. Some common problems that are associated with it are dysphagia, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Effect of diabetes on the nervous system

When the patient’s blood sugar level/blood sugar level remains high for a long time, the blood vessels in the body that feed the nerves themselves will be damaged. When these blood vessels themselves are damaged, the nerves in the patient’s body will automatically get damaged. The end result of the damage to these nerves can be felt by the patient in his/her legs/feet and in his/her hands. In some cases, the nerves that are damaged due to damage to the blood vessels carry them to the patient’s digestive organs. As a result, the functioning of the vital organs of the patient’s body will get disrupted due to the damage. Nerve damage caused by diabetes is called diabetic neuropathy. Some reports mention that neuropathy is present in up to 50% of people with diabetes.

Effects of diabetes on blood vessels

When the blood sugar level rises, the elasticity of the blood vessels in our body decreases. This will narrow the blood vessels which directly affects the flow of blood in our body. When the blood vessels in our body shrink in size, it causes a decrease in blood flow and oxygen levels in our body. As a result, the patient runs the risk of hypertension. At the same time, diabetes also affects small and large blood vessels because high blood sugar levels can damage these blood vessels.
